Equal Pay for Women 2014

Why is there a "pay gap" ? Why do men make more than women? Is this really true?

This was the "Controversy of the Week" featured on the cover of The Week magazine. This followed the blocking by the U.S.Senate of the Pay Check Fairness Act last week which has been reintroduced in different Congresses since 2009 and which has passed the House- but never the Senate.

While it is illegal to pay differently for the same work (unlike back in the Lowell Mill days), there are factors that lead women and men to work different hours. There may also be circumstances where hiring isn't fair- and promotions are biaised.

The following article gives a great survey of the movement- and the progress in closing the pay gap targeted by this bill.

What do you think? Can you share any examples of where this is true? Where it isn't true? Are there any job fields that are not as open to women as they could be? Are there any job fields that women don't oftenchoose- that they could? What makes the difference?
